6th Grade Stem

In the 6th grade at Laurel, STEM initiatives are built into all subjects across the curriculum as are the arts and humanities.  For example:

  • In Language Arts, students are given the opportunity to write myths explaining natural phenomena and then asked to research what science has to say about those same phenomena.
  • In math class, the girls are performing exercise experiments and recording, graphing and analyzing their data.

The Laurel MS egg-drop team competed against the 1st and 2nd year engineering students at CWRU - AND WON!

  • Social studies plays host to a trebuchet/catapult building competition during a unit on Medieval Europe.
  • Science classes introduce students to and encourage the use of new, interactive technologies like glogs (graphic blogs).
  • General music class uses Sibelius, an electronic music notation program, to compose, arrange and orchestrate music.

All of this is capped off by a week-long curriculum at the Butler Campus focused on tinkering
