Passport 2011-2012 Trips
SPRING BREAK 2012
Hope for Honduras, Grades 9-12
Laurel students, led by Upper School teacher Marti Hardy, will travel to Nuevo Paraiso to the Flor Azul Boys Community to complete a variety of construction and other service projects. Working with Hope for Honduran Children Foundation, students will help to provide necessary tools for poverty stricken children. The approximate cost of the trip will be $2,300.
MAY TERM 2012
Renaissance Italy and Classical Greece, Grades 7-8
Middle School teacher Dominique Poirier will lead Middle School students on a tour of Florence, Rome, Pompeii, Capri, Delphi and Athens. This trip will bring to life the ancient history of Renaissance Italy and Classical Greece at the same time that students explore the modern cities of both cultures. The approximate cost of the trip will be $3,100.
Great Moments in London History, Grades 8-10
Middle School and Upper School students visiting London with Upper School teacher Trish Harpring will focus on three periods in London’s History: Shakespearean London, London during the Blitz (WWII), and modern London. By focusing on art, the theatre and architecture, students will get a concentrated view of how the city has changed over time and how it is preparing for the future. The approximate cost of the trip will be $3,300.
The Art of Italy and France, Grades 9-12
Led by Upper School teacher Renee Psiakis, students traveling to Rome, Florence and Paris on this 11-day trip will view the art and architecture of the three cities and recreate it in photography, sketches and writing. Sites they will visit include the Coliseum, Forum, Vatican and the Sistine Chapel in Rome; the Uffizi, the Accademia, Ponte Vecchio, and the Duomo in Florence; and Notre Dame and the Louvre in Paris. The approximate cost of the trip will be $3,000.
SUMMER 2012
Botswana, Grades 9-12
The Maru-a-Pula School, in Botswana’s capital city, Gaborone, is a world-class coeducational independent day and boarding school that focuses on providing an excellent education in a multi racial setting in the region of southern Africa. The school’s diverse international makeup, its talented and highly educated faculty, and the warm friendship extended by its students, make this a sought after oportunity for Laurel girls. Two Upper School Laurel girls will be selected to travel to Botswanna in June for a two-week homestay and school visit accompanied by two students from Maru-a-Pula who will visit Laurel in May. Selection for this program is competitive and preference is given to Juniors and Seniors.
A Cultural Tour of Japan, Grades 9-12
This 2-3 week trip in June, led by Upper School teacher Wendy Butler, will concentrate on Japan’s unique cultural history. Exploring both the ancient and the modern, students will gain a basic understanding of Japanese history while visiting Kyoto, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Himeji and Nagasaki. Students also will participate in creating art throughout their journey. The culminating experience of the trip will be a short home-stay experience with a Japanese family while visiting our sister school in Morioka City. This approximate cost of the trip will be $3,700.

In the fall your daughter will attend a Passport Chapel that will fully introduce these trips. At that time we will announce the application timeline and open the application process. We hope to have all trips filled and in the final planning stage by mid-October. Please direct any questions about each trip to the trip leader.
