Visual Arts and Performing Arts

Visual Arts 5-8
The overall goal of middle school art lessons is that each girl will learn to see through, and effectively communicate with, the lenses and language of visual art. The overarching intent is that each student will gain confidence that she has the ability to manipulate art elements and materials to articulate and amplify her own ideas. Concomitantly, each student will strengthen her ability to think critically and to problem-solve; a student will begin to analyze and understand why and how she responds to visual cues in artworks and in her surroundings. She will learn that there is validity in trial and error, and she should become less uncomfortable tolerating uncertainty and ambiguity as she works to realize an idea in visual form. Over the course of her middle school years, a student should come away with a greater appreciative understanding of the artistic contributions of others, be they other cultures, other artists‘ styles, or the visual statements of fellow students.

Performing Arts 5-8
