Mathematics

The middle school math program at Laurel School emphasizes the development of problem solving and critical thinking skills. Students are actively engaged in experiences designed to deepen their understanding, and strengthen their knowledge and application of mathematical concepts. Learning with genuine understanding is our focus as students move from a more concrete way of thinking in the Fifth Grade to a more abstract way during the seventh and eighth grade years. Girls evaluate their own thinking as well as the thought processes of others in the class as a way to develop sound reasoning skills. In addition, they learn to apply their arithmetic, geometric, and algebraic skills in a variety of applications. Students are encouraged to talk and write about their personal problem-solving strategies so that teachers can help them become more aware of, and build on, their knowledge of mathematics.

All of the middle school math teachers are knowledgeable about the ways girls learn math best. Our goal is to help each girl become a successful math student. Courses are taught in a spiraling manner so the girls can build upon their knowledge base and make connections to what they know, what they are learning in other classes, and the world around them. Beginning in seventh grade, students are placed in courses that are appropriately challenging. We follow the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards throughout middle school.
