At once innovative and traditional, Laurel's Middle School curricular activities are designed to emphasize the importance of the learning process while acquiring core skills and content.

Laurel's Middle School provides a unique learning environment designed to promote the academic, social and emotional development of early adolescent girls.

Dedicated to girls' education, a richly integrated curriculum in academics, athletics, and the arts encourages students to experience relationships with each other, their school community and the outside world.

The Big Dig The Seventh Grade year begins in an interdisciplinary, hands-on way.  For two full weeks, the entire seventh grade class spends all day "on site" at the mock archaeological dig at our Butler Campus.

By sifting through buried artifacts, students learn lessons about native Ohioans, explore the ethics of archaeology, learn to perform the mathematical calculations necessary to accurately map and analyze artifacts, read a related novel, and take part in various cultural activities.

On average, 20% of the 8th grade students will complete Honors Algebra I and will enter Laurel's Upper School on an accelerated math trajectory that enables her to complete one, two, or sometimes three semesters of college calculus by graduation.

Power of the Pen  The Laurel teams regularly take home top honors in Northeast Ohio in this prestigious nationwide middle school writing competition.

Sixth Grade Interdisciplinary Days  Greek Olympics, Medieval Fair, Asian Expo, and Renaissance Day demarcate the year for the grade and illustrate the magic of our Sixth Grade curriculum.

From September to June, the coordinated subject areas are integrated to provide an engaging year of learning.

Intersession  Strategically placed mid-winter, this week of hands-on learning takes students out of their regular routines as they spend a week in miniclasses ranging from winter survival and mural painting to the history of chocolate, community service, and sewing.

Groups form across grade levels, and often lead to new interests and new friendships.

iProjects  Each Laurel eighth grader spends three to four months designing and completing
an independent research iProject, bringing together the talents and skills
she has developed during her Middle School years.
