Laurel Primary Students Explore the World
Studying languages in Laurel's Primary creates a solid foundation for children to become lifelong language learners. Teaching is done almost entirely in the target language, with the objective being to provide students with an immersion-style experience. Our goal is for girls to develop a sense of confidence in their own abilities to function in the target language and for them genuinely to enjoy language learning. In keeping with Laurel's mission, "to inspire each girl to fulfill her promise and better the world," exposure to different languages and cultures broadens girls' world views, enhances their sense of empathy and promotes curiosity about the world.
In Kindergarten through Second Grade, students are exposed to three modern languages - Chinese, French and Spanish - with each language being taught once a week. Building on the theme of "Myself, My Family, My Community, My World" students in K-2 learn language through units that are linked to the Social Studies curriculum. This approach allows us to build on their schema and teach language in a meaningful manner. The emphasis during K-2 is on receptive language, or listening skills, so that the girls become confident and comfortable being immersed in the target language.
In the 2011-2012 school year, Third Grade students will choose one of the three modern languages for a longer sequence of language study. Greater exposure to both oral and written language will help students become more proficient in their listening and speaking skills as well as build reading and writing skills. Oral communication will continue to be our foremost goal, with grammar being taught in a natural and contextualized way. The girls will study the same language in Fourth Grade and throughout Middle School, so that they are ready for Level III by the time they enter Upper School.
