Art

Art is a language of expression and communication. It involves discovering ideas and transforming them into visual form. This process is nurtured through exposure to diverse examples of art from a variety cultures and through repeated opportunities to work with a variety of art media and techniques. Students are given appropriate motivation and guidance as they explore and communicate their ideas through art.

The Primary Art Program at Laurel draws from the principles of Discipline Based Art Education, while seeking to integrate experiences with themes from classroom curricula.

Our goals in primary art include:

  • exposing students to a variety of media and techniques for creating art
  • encouraging expression through art
  • providing a supportive and inspiring environment in which to create art
  • nurturing confidence and enjoyment in the creative process
  • developing appropriate skills with tools and materials
  • celebrating diversity and art from different cultures
