The Dig

The Seventh Grade year begins in an interdisciplinary, hands-on way.  For two full weeks, the entire seventh grade class spends all day "on site" at the mock archaeological dig at our Butler Campus.

By sifting through buried artifacts, students learn lessons about native Ohioans, explore the ethics of archaeology, learn to perform the mathematical calculations necessary to accurately map and analyze artifacts, read a related novel, and take part in various cultural activities.

Two seventh graders record data that will enable them to compute both the area and the volume of their grid

Students excavate a large-scale, archaeological site modeled after a late prehistoric, Ohio culture. Then they use relative and absolute dating techniques on the artifacts they find.

The students collect, measure, and analyze data as they are immersed in the field and laboratory methods of professional archaeologists.

Students need to measure the area they've excavated very carefully, as depth of the fossil correlates to the age in which it originated
