Upper School Service Learning
| Implicit in the Laurel School mission statement: To inspire each girl to fulfill her promise and to better the world is the expectation that each student take an active role in serving the community outside of Laurel School. To this end, she will complete a minimum of 50 hours of service learning as a requirement for graduation from the Upper School. |
The Upper School Service Learning Board is comprised of two senior coordinators and 20 representatives from all four classes. This Board coordinates school-wide initiatives, such as Lee Jeans Breast Cancer Awareness Day, Race for the Cure, Thanksgiving Food Collection and Harvest for Hunger Food Drive. The Board also initiates and coordinates initiatives specific to the Upper School. Upper School students are encouraged to recognize need in the Greater Cleveland community and respond to the identified need by creating appropriate projects and by providing volunteer hours. Students and faculty are continually reaching out to make community connections. |
The Cleveland Reads tutoring initiative was funded by a Laurel alumna who provided reading kits for the Garfield Communty Center. Freshmen visited each Tuesday to help students K-2 learn how to read and grades 3-6 improve their reading skills. |
Initiatives begin in many ways: individual contacts; identified community need; recognition of a social problem; the wide range of nonprofit organizations in the Cleveland community; and, the academic curriculum which provides a springboard to build connections with the world outside of the classroom. Cleveland is a city with a strong philanthropic commitment and a very, strong nonprofit sector. Laurel students are expected to continue that community spirit and become involved citizens.
In addition to their work within the Cleveland community, Laurel students strive to connect with communities outside of the local borders. Laurel students get involved in opportunities to meet the needs of other communities, both domestically and abroad. Laurel students respond with compassion to current events and take leadership roles in responding to immediate needs. Upper School students recognize that they can give of their time, treasure, and talent and that the need for community involvement crosses all boundaries.
