Celebrating 90 Years on Lyman Circle!

In September 1928, Sarah Lyman boldly moved Laurel School from its home on Euclid Avenue to its new campus in Shaker Heights. When she brought her teachers out to see the new property, pre-construction, she told them to wear their galoshes. What they saw was a swamp near an old apple orchard. What Mrs. Lyman envisioned was a great Tudor-style building where her girls would have the finest education in a location “promising fresh air, sunshine and space. There our bodies can be kept well and our souls have a chance to develop.” And, of course, that dream became a reality.
One Lyman Circle is more than a physical space. It is where we first learned quadratic equations and how to conjugate verbs. Where we learned to find our collective voice and give our Senior Speeches. Where teachers encouraged us to take risks and to challenge ourselves intellectually. It is where we grew from curious young girls to confident young women who made lifelong friends along the way. It is the heart center of the Laurel community. This year, as Laurel celebrates 90 years on Lyman Circle, it seems only fitting that we declare our Love for Lyman!
