LCRG Research Featured in International Journal of Early Childhood Environmental Education

During the 2015-2016 school year, Laurel’s Center for Research on Girls (LCRG) conducted a research project exploring the benefits of a nature-based education.
The research sought to gain a better understanding of the relationships between learning environment (nature-based and traditional classroom) and aspects of kindergarten readiness including social interaction, play, behavior, school enjoyment and nature appreciation, and was among the first of its kind to utilize quantitative methods to assess important kindergarten readiness skills. Since Laurel offers both traditional and nature-based pre-primary programs, this study may also be the first to compare children’s skills in these areas between two pre-primary programs from the same school.

Results of the LCRG study were included in the Summer 2019 issue of the International Journal of Early Childhood Environmental Education. Results from the study indicate that both groups are equally prepared for kindergarten with regard for social-emotional, academic and pretend play skills.
