Speech and Debate Sends 18 Team Members to State Finals in March, 4 to Nationals in June

Laurel's Speech and Debate Team has had a fantastic season!
After 15 local competitions, 18 students (more than half of the team!) will be traveling to Wooster for the Ohio Speech and Debate Association State Finals March 6-7. In June, Sarah Hatem '21 and Abby McGowan '21 will be representing the North Coast District of the National Speech and Debate Association at the National Tournament in Albuquerque, NM, competing in Public Forum Debate. Sarah and Abby qualified with an undefeated record at the qualifying tournament February 14-15 and are the third Public Forum Debate team from Laurel to qualify for Nationals. Joining them on the North Coast District World Schools Debate Team are classmates Ria Raj '21 and Jane Jusko '21. World Schools Debate only competes at the National Tournament, and our district is the defending champion in this event, so Jane and Ria are joining fellow all-stars from our district to compete at the highest level.

In addition, Dorothy Bogen '20 and Jane Jusko '21 who were both awarded the National Association of Speech and Debate's Academic All-American award! This coveted award is earned by less than 1% of the 141,000 student members of the Association and recognizes academic rigor, competitive speech and debate success, and personal excellence. You can read more about Dorothy's award win in the Sun News. Jane Jusko was written up in her hometown papers The Lakewood Observer and the Sun Post News, which also quotes Laurel Speech and Debate Director Rich Kawolics.
