Laurel Speech and Debate Team Continues to Shine

The Laurel Speech and Debate Team has had an incredible season!

 The group of 30 students has competed at 12 virtual tournaments since October, with more to come with our State and National Qualifying tournaments in February, States in March, and Nationals in June. In January, the team competed in three tournaments with the final regular season competition coming up on January 30. In the second semester, Charlotte Davie '22 placed three times including a tournament championship in Humorous Interpretation; Sarah Hatem '21 and Abby McGowan '21 earned a tournament championship and a finalist position in Public Forum Debate; Jane Jusko '21 was a tournament champion in Lincoln Douglas Debate; Barbara Yang '21 and Katherine Cassese '21 earned two tournament championships in Policy Debate; Reema Gupta '22 and Esther Ling '23 each placed in Congressional Debate; Aya Pinhasi '24 earned a second place and a finalist finish in United States Extemporaneous Speaking; Becky Walker '23 and Madison Orlando '23 were finalists in Public Forum Debate; Madie Malbasa '24 was a finalist twice in Original Oratory; Kaitlyn Ernst '24 earned a tournament championship and third place finish in Lincoln Douglas Debate; and Andrea Ivanko '24 placed for the first time in International Extemporaneous Speaking. On January 23, the team hosted the Laurel Gator Games, where we hosted students from Ohio, Indiana and Colorado.
