Kaitlyn Ernst ‘24 and Sam Iyer ‘24 Take Home Several Wins at Ohio State Science Day

Laurel had two Upper School students participate at this year’s State Science Day, a program of The Ohio Academy of Science!

For over 90 years, State Science Day has provided students and teachers an opportunity to highlight students who go above and beyond through scientific, project-based learning. Students qualify to participate through local and district science days and have the opportunity to compete for scholarships and awards.

Kaitlyn Ernst ‘24 and Sam Iyer ‘24 both competed and took home a combined seven awards!

Kaitlyn’s four awards include:

Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in Biotechnology & Biomedical Technologies for outstanding project in the field of Biotechnology
- 2nd Place in the 10th-12th category
Osteopathic Medical Award for outstanding project related to the field of medicine
- 1st place in the 10th-12th category

Future Physician - Scientist Award for outstanding project related to the field of medicine and health science
- 2nd Place in the 10th-12th category
Multi-Year Award for qualifying for States four years in a row!

Sam’s three awards include:

Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in Biotechnology & Biomedical Technologies for outstanding project in the field of Biotechnology
- 3nd Place in the 10th-12th category
Nationwide Children’s Hospital Research Institute Trainee Association (RITA) for outstanding research and project in the biomedical sciences
- 3rd Place
Ohio Northern University State Science Day Scholarship for outstanding performance on a state science day project.
- One of only five to be selected for this $2,000 renewable scholarship
