BRITTANY LEVY MD '11
Resident Physician and Innovator
A general surgery resident, Dr. Brittany Levy ’11 knew there had to be a better way to save lives. Hemorrhaging is a leading cause of death in trauma, but an estimated 30% of tourniquets, meant to stem blood loss but improperly applied by civilian first responders, can lead to severe complications or death. So she designed the TalkiTourni LLC, an automated device to improve the outcomes of adequately applied tourniquets outside of a hospital setting, thereby reducing the rate of preventable death related to uncontrollable extremity bleeding or hemorrhage in trauma. The TalkiTourni LLC provides interactive audio and visual emergency instructions on how to apply the tourniquet properly and works in much the same way that an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is used in standard CPR. In a situation where every minute counts, Brittany’s innovation is especially beneficial in rural areas where there is longer travel time to the nearest hospital.
Beyond TalkiTourni LLC, she is developing an ultrasound AI algorithm which is being reviewed by a government contractor of applications to improve speedy prehospital care for trauma. An innovation includes those related to a novel thoracostomy tube (chest tube) device with a chlorhexidine biopatch and internal bumper-bolster system to reduce dislodgement and surgical site infections. Additionally, she has collaborated with chemists to develop an innovation related to early detection of abnormal gynecologic-colorectal connections in the GI tract.
Brittany earned a bachelor of science degree in biology and a bachelor of arts degree in Classical Studies, Latin Literature and Languages from Indiana University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati and began her general surgery residency training at the University of Kentucky (UK), College of Medicine.
She spent two years during her general surgery residency learning principles of quality improvement, patient safety and innovation as the Surgical Leadership Research Fellow.
Described as “truly dynamic” by the chair of the UK department of surgery, Brittany’s goal is threefold: to be a true academic surgeon scientist, an educator and a leader. Her extensive research, impressive for someone so young in her field, has been published in numerous leading peer-review journals on topics as wide ranging as the ”Effect of Medicaid expansion on inflammatory bowel disease and healthcare utilization,” to “Injury Pattern and Outcomes following All-Terrain Vehicle Accidents in Kentucky Children,” to ”Surgical Site Infection in Colorectal Resections: What is the Cost?” Not only is she the first author on 14 of 36 published research papers to date, she is an engaging speaker, as evidenced by the five presentations that she gave in 2023 at the annual meeting of the American College of Surgeons. A mentor to medical students, she twice received the Excellence in Medical Student Education Award and was appointed to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, which focuses on improving the clinical learning environment for medical trainees nationwide.
The accolades do not stop there. Brittany was selected by the Veterans Health Administration to serve as the 2021-22 Chief Resident in Quality and Patient Safety at the Lexington Veterans Affairs Medical Center. In 2023 she received the UK College of Medicine Mission Award for being “a leader in promoting quality improvement processes and innovation in the hospital system and addressing health disparities in the community.” And in 2024 she was asked to participate in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)- funded Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Regional Entrepreneurship Development (I-RED) Program. This June Brittany returns to Cleveland for a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.
For her public health innovations and her research and focus on patient safety and access to healthcare, the Laurel School Alumnae Association bestows its 2026 Young Alum of Distinction Award on Dr. Brittany Levy, Class of 2011.
