Ruhlman Family Center at Butler

The Ruhlman Family Center (RFC) is a 12,000-square-foot, multi-use classroom and environmental science building designed to enhance learning for all Laurel students and faculty. As the primary academic building on the Butler Campus, it will provide dynamic spaces that foster exploration, collaboration, and connection.

It is slated to open for use in January 2026, with a grand opening celebration scheduled for Spring 2026.
The Ruhlman Family Center represents an exciting step forward for Laurel’s Butler Campus, creating a hub of learning, sustainability, and community engagement.
Featuring several key spaces for the Laurel community:
  • Two dedicated classrooms for Grade 3, beginning in Winter 2026, as the grade moves from its current home in Reid Lodge.
  • Two flexible classrooms available to the entire Laurel community, supporting visiting classes from Lyman Campus, sustainability and science programs, and providing shelter for Grades 4, 5, and Outdoor Pre-K during particularly inclement weather.
  • A light-filled dining room and full kitchen capable of serving 100+ people, offering daily lunch service for students and faculty, as well as an event space for the broader Laurel community.
  • A central meeting room designed as a collaborative space for faculty, parents, and students.
  • Flexible office spaces that enable Laurel faculty, staff, and administrators to work from Butler, strengthening the connection between the two campuses.
  • A 150-seat outdoor amphitheater, providing a creative space for learning and performances. The amphitheater is connected to the RFC by a tree-lined walkway.
  • A covered patio that offers weather-protected outdoor learning opportunities.
  • A back lawn with playground elements for recess, physical education, and daily outdoor play.
  • A spacious turnaround drive designed for smooth pick-up and drop-off, featuring benches, bike racks to encourage outdoor connections, and a rain garden for sustainable water management.
