“When students are younger, they move from a car seat to a booster seat and then to being a passenger in the back seat,” said Ms. Maiden. “Middle school is when they gradually move to the front passenger seat. They’re not driving yet, but they’re becoming more aware of what’s happening around them and taking on more responsibility.” 

That increased independence brings significant emotional, physical, and social changes. In fact, Ms. Maiden says that “Middle School includes the widest range of development students experience during their school years.” She also encourages parents to approach the transition with patience and realistic expectations, focusing on coaching kids versus rescuing them for tough situations.
