Dr. Rachel Herlein

Associate Head of School
Curriculum & Program Leadership Team
Dr. Herlein brings three decades of education experience to Laurel, having spent 22 of those years as a leader in all-girls schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Wheaton College, a master’s from Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate in education from Northeastern University where her studies concentrated on organizational change management. 

Before coming to Laurel, Dr. Herlein served for seven years as the academic dean and dean of faculty at Holton-Arms, a girls’ school (Grades 3-12) in Bethesda, MD. Prior to Holton-Arms, she held several positions, including English teacher, theater director, director of academic development and residential life leader at Garrison Forest School, a K-12 boarding and day school in Owings Mills, MD. She also taught elementary school and English in the Baltimore County Public Schools. She speaks regularly at professional conferences and symposiums about the ways schools can live their missions through meaningful professional learning, intentional program design and a systems approach to effecting change. In addition to her role as Associate Head, Dr. Herlein is also a co-director of Laurel’s Center for Research on Girls.
