Laurel’s approach to college guidance is highly individualized, and our mission is to help each girl find colleges that best match her interests, talents and goals. We work closely with our girls to help them understand the college process, develop an appropriate list of schools to explore and take the appropriate standardized tests.
The College Guidance office provides support on college essays, and reviews every application prior to submission to ensure that each girl is presenting her best self to each college. Laurel also provides standardized test preparation classes tailored for either the ACT or the SAT as part of the Junior year curriculum.

Collaboration among the student, her family and the college counselors is essential in the college process. We believe that the girl must take the lead, with parents and counselors offering support and encouragement.

The college counselors meet with the Seniors regularly, and are also available to parents by phone, email or in person as often as needed. Counselors actively engage with Juniors throughout the year, and talk with Ninth and Tenth Graders--and their parents--periodically, to provide information, dispel myths and reassure them that they will be ready for the college process when the time comes.

We are passionate about getting to know, support and advocate for every Laurel girl!

  • SAT and Subject Tests

The SAT Reasoning Test, designed to test math and critical reading skills, is a three hour exam. Each portion of the SAT is graded on a scale from 200 to 800. SAT Subject Tests measure knowledge of a single subject area. The hour-long, multiple-choice Subject Tests are given on the same dates as the SAT, except in March when only the SAT is offered.

  • ACT

The ACT is a battery of four tests that combine elements of aptitude and achievement testing in English, math, reading and science. A writing section is also available, and we recommend that all students take the writing test. The ACT provides separate sub-scores for each section as well as an overall composite score. The score range is 1 to 36 in each subject area.

  • Test Prep for SAT and ACT

Laurel offers test preparation classes tailored for either the ACT or the SAT as part of the Junior year LifeSkills curriculum. Students take diagnostic tests at the beginning of Junior year to help them determine whether to pursue prep work in the ACT or SAT, and then meet in small groups with professional tutors to prepare for the December SAT or ACT.
