Curriculum Detail - Grade 1

First Grade

First Grade Curriculum-at-a-Glance

In First Grade, students begin to identify themselves as readers, writers, mathematicians, and engineers. Math helps to solidify their number sense and to promote skills that help girls think more abstractly and problem solve in a variety of ways.. In Language Arts, students develop concrete foundational skills in phonemic awareness and phonics to develop strong decoding and encoding skills. Through interdisciplinary experiences at the Butler Campus, First Graders delve into the five components of resilience: creativity, growth mindset, purpose, self-care and relationships. Girls develop their sense of self through discussions, writing, presenting to their peers and taking on classroom responsibilities. First Grade girls examine their own identity, then move on to discover what makes a family and a community. Students then examine families far away to compare and contrast ideas, develop growing awareness of the world, and begin using a variety of resources to conduct their own factual investigations. Students end the year investigating families long ago using the pioneer era as a focus to learn about planning and conducting research from a wide variety of resources and showing their learning through a variety of mediums Through all of these experiences, First Graders consider what it means to be a member of a community and how they can contribute positively by being civically engaged.
