EJ Students Fight for Clean Air with Plain Dealer Op-Ed

Congratulations to Environmental Justice Semester students Asalé Jones ‘26, Faye Moledina ‘25 and Ivey Williams ‘25 who are advocating against House Bill 201 with an op-ed in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

If enacted, House Bill 201 will limit options for vehicular carbon emissions standards in the state. The bill, which was passed by the Ohio House by a 70-23 vote in November, must be passed in the Senate and signed into law by the governor before taking effect. It would prevent Ohio from adopting California’s vehicle emission standards.

These passionate students state that as part of their work, “We are working to address the disproportionate effects of poor air quality in marginalized communities. People in Cleveland shouldn’t have to settle for polluted air when clean air is a basic human right.” If the bill is passed, the students go on to say that “Such emission standards will work to combat the health effects associated with polluted air, focusing on the damage inflicted upon vulnerable groups, from infants to the elderly within underserved communities.”
