Speech and Debate Sees Continued Success

Laurel Speech and Debate had an outstanding first tournament of the new year in early January where they competed at Wadsworth and placed 5th overall in team sweeps. All Upper School students who placed earned bids to the State Tournament! Individual results follow.

Extemp Debate (Middle School)
  • 1st place - Claire Witalec ‘28
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
  • 1st place (Bid) - Kaitlyn Ernst ‘24
United States Extemporaneous Speaking
  • 5th place (Bid) - Claire Sheeler ‘25
  • 3rd place (Bid) - Ella Witalec ‘25
Laurel co-hosted the HB/Laurel Speech and Debate Tournament on January 13 and placed 3rd overall. Kaitlyn Ernst, Katie Izanec ‘25 and Claire Sheeler all received their 4th bid at the competition and qualified for the State Tournament. 

On January 20 Laurel participated virtually in the University School tournament and came in 6th place. Julia Duong ‘26 received her fourth bid during this tournament and has officially qualified for the State Tournament.

On January 27 the team competed in their final competition of the regular season at the Solon Tournament where they came in 6th place.
 
To date Laurel has six students that have qualified for the State Tournament!
