Connecting Alumnae

Lyman Circles

What is it?
Lyman Circles are a virtual forum for Laurel alumnae to easily connect with others who share similar interests, professions, or are within the same geographic area. The purpose is to create opportunities for alumnae to build relationships, share expertise and ask for advice in an accessible way that fits into busy schedules.

Circles are run through the Google Groups platform, similar to an email listserv. [You do not need a Gmail address to join, however you do need a Google account.] Circle members can be as active or passive as they wish -- from simply reading the conversations to responding to group emails daily.

The Alumnae Office will host optional Zoom gatherings for each Circle and its members at various times throughout the year.

Google Groups Pointers
How to associate your non-Gmail email address with a Google account:
Opening and using Google Groups:
  • Click the Google Workspace grid icon and then select Google Groups.
  • All groups you've joined will be listed under My Groups.
  • Clicking on a Group will allow you to view all conversations within that Group. Similar to an email inbox, all the various conversations will be organized into discussion threads by topic.
    • Click New Conversation if you’d like to start a conversation about a new topic.
    • You can reply to an existing conversation in Google Groups or directly via your email inbox. “Reply to author” replies to only the original conversation poster. “Reply all” responds to the whole group.
  • Navigate to My Membership Settings (in the left column) to change your email preferences. You can elect to receive an email every time there is a reply to a Group conversation, a Digest email once a day, or no emails at all.
    • Under My Membership Settings, you will also see an option to Leave Group if you would no longer like to be a part of the online community.
  • Additional information and tips on Google Groups can be found at https://support.google.com/groups/#topic=9216.

Be Kind and Courteous
  • Kindness is crucial in this space for our Laurel alumnae community. The exchange of different viewpoints is essential for the public good but it must be done with compassion.
No Hate Speech or Bullying
  • Bullying is not allowed nor are posts or comments intended to create member conflict. Profanity, insulting or degrading language around race, religion, ability, national origin, culture won't be tolerated.
No Promotions, Spam or Campaign Endorsements
  • While we support women entrepreneurs who dream, dare and do, sales, marketing and spam are not allowed. No endorsing candidates for political office.
